Disinfectant Benefits and Limitations of the Sun’s EMF Production
Understanding the disinfectant benefits and limitations of the sun’s EMF production
Is the sun truly nature’s disinfectant? What are the disinfectant benefits and limitations of the sun’s EMF? As humans, we’ve evolved to exist within a natural electromagnetic environment. Unlike the man-made wireless technology with toxic levels of EMF and harmful biological effects that require shielding and mitigation, the sun’s production of a naturally occurring EMF – ultraviolet light – has many known benefits to us.
One such benefit scientists have known of for over 100 years is the sun’s ability to kill germs with direct exposure. We understand that the light emitted by the sun can be helpful in tackling bacteria and viruses, but how does it work, and to what extent?
Killing 99% of Germs with Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI)
Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) is a disinfection method that uses ultraviolet light to kill or inactivate microorganisms. UVGI has a variety of applications in industries and facilities where it is critical to eliminate nearly all germs, such as hospitals and sewage.
To kill germs, a very specific wavelength of ultraviolet light — 254 nanometers — is necessary. The sun does a great job of producing this form of EMF, but how exactly does this special ultraviolet light work to kill germs? It does so by destroying nucleic acids and disrupting their DNA, leaving them unable to perform vital cellular functions.
Unfortunately, a limitation is that ultraviolet light can only kill germs with direct contact; if germs find hiding places, such as shaded cracks, they can and do escape the wrath of the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
How You Can Leverage the Sun as a Natural Disinfectant
- To rid bedding, pillows, and mattresses of viruses and bacteria leave them in the sun for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Ensure all surfaces get time in direct sunlight.
- Hanging wet clothes up to dry? Hanging them in the sun will kill germs but don’t rush to put them away – they must be left in the sun until they are completely dry.
- Water can be purified naturally with the help of direct sunlight but to do so effectively, it must be in a glass container and left for a minimum of 6 hours.
- When was the last time you cleaned your suitcase? Whether it traveled with you through a high-traffic airport or has just been stored away in a closet collecting dust for too long… you can leverage the sun to disinfect it. Lay it open in the early afternoon so that the sun is high enough to get deep into all corners.
Keep in Mind
The beneficial factors of the naturally occurring EMF the sun produces are far-reaching, though also not without risks/limitations. But it must be noted that as a species we have been evolving to our sun for the millennia. The same cannot be said for the man-made EMFs (cell phones, wireless technology) that are causing increasingly negative biological effects. Comparatively, it was only in the very recent 20th century, that artificial EMFs were introduced into our otherwise natural environment. We have not yet evolved to absorb this new type of EMF.
